For the professional Sydney personal trainer, it can be both a challenging yet rewarding experience to train the corporate executive. Though it seems unfair to make generalizations about personalities, I have noticed some major character traits that are common in the 22 executives whom I train. A few of these traits are intelligence, obsessive compulsive behavior and type A. What psychologically drives the executive to achieve goals must be put into perspective. Success will typically follow when the personal fitness trainer determines the “driving force” that motivates his corporate executive.

The corporate executive believes that he is the popular USC quarterback. The problem with this is that he looks into the mirror only to see thinning hair, a double chin and a belt line that is going south. Fear grips the corporate executive because he is not what he used to be. Overt reality suddenly strikes and they feel they must seek the services of a personal trainer. When he finds the right one, a lifetime commitment to both fitness and the trainer follows. The personal goals of the corporate executives are typically centered on reinstating self-esteem, youthfulness and power. He will put his best foot forward to achieve these ends.

The dilemma comes to light when the executive swaps hats with the personal fitness trainer. It seems rather awkward for him to take orders rather than give them. What is more is that the instructions that the personal fitness coach meets out are usually distasteful and unforgiving.

One key ingredient to developing a rapport with the corporate executive is communication. Reasons and explanations should be given for everything they do and experience with you. During workout rest intervals, discussions of Ben Bernake, Rep. Barney Frank and Richard Fuld of Lehman’s will give him the impetus to see him through the rest of his workout. Exacting behavior is what builds the corporate executive, and he will expect the same from his Sydney personal trainer. His personal fitness trainer must run his own corporate fitness corporation, understand local, national and world economics and invest in his future or all respect will be lost.

The corporate executive will exceed expectations in the presence of the personal trainer, but when there is no personal trainer to be accountable to, he may sometimes “fall off the wagon”. This on and off again phenomena is what makes fitness goal setting frustrating and difficult for the Sydney corporate personal trainer. Reasons for this may vary, but in my observation the busy, stressful and unpredictable lifestyles of executives are the triggers.

Thanks to e-mails and Blackberry texting a concerned personal trainer is able to maintain a close personal relationship with his executive client and will be able to buffer the triggers that lead to a possible relapse. When the corporate executive comes to the realization that you truly care for him outside of the scheduled training sessions, his commitment to fitness and health will solidify. The Sydney corporate personal trainer will truly see a transformation in the corporate executive when a bond of trust is built up between them.

Your corporate executive relies on measurements and statistical charts to document their weight loss, exercise rhythm and body composition changes. He will be turned off if his results are not charted. Your positive reinforcement is also important for him to hear as this is how he will motivate his employees.
